Though they seem to be very distinct neighborhoods at first, Alcântara, Necessidades, and Santos-o-Velho have many things in common amongst themselves – more than people would actually think!
For starters, they were once the favorite spots where rich and powerful families – Royal family included! – ordered the construction of their homes, giving these areas great prestige and development back in the day.
Another thing would be that these areas are quite related to great religious events, such as the tragic story of the Roman Saints Verissimo, Máxima and Júlia, in the 3rd century, to the great miracles of Our Lady of Necessidades, who protected a couple of weavers against a bout of Black Plague, sailors on their way to unknown lands and even got to cure a very ill King!
And last, but not least, these neighborhoods have been changing quite a lot in the last couple of years – especially Alcântara – and are turning into very interesting parts of Lisbon, as houses are being restored and businesses are being created, as well as one of the most interesting viewpoints of the city.
Would you like to know more? Then come and join us on this 2h30 trip to all of these neighborhoods and get to learn the history of one the most interesting parts of Lisbon! Hope to see you there!
At Calvário Square, next to the fountain right in the middle of the square. I will be wearing a red cap.
